Great news, – the Watermill Hotel is pleased to announce the extension of its premises.

Due to open later this year, we are very excited about the launch of THE BALLROOM, a beautiful, architect-designed function suite. The exclusive Ballroom at the Watermill will be tastefully designed and will hold up to 150 people – the ideal venue for meetings, conferences, exclusive galas and weddings and private parties.

We have uploaded the architects drawing for your information, for enquiries please contact a member of staff who will be happy to help.

Great views over historic Paisley

We only recently discovered that Live Search Maps now show fantastic bird’s eye views over Paisley. The clarity and details are amazing.

Take a look at the view of the Watermill Hotel on our map page, with the White Cart Water raging over the Hammills between us and the historic Anchor mill.

The views over Paisley Abbey close to the hotel are equally glorious.

Alexander Gowdie at the Paisley Museum

Great news for art lovers and connouisserus of 20th century Scottish painters. Paisley Museum is hosting the first major retrospective of the work of Alexander Gowdie.

Born in Paisley in 1933, Gowdie studied at the Glasgow School of Art and although best known for his portraiture, he had a remarkable breadth of styles and subjects. His series of paintings inspired by Brun’s Tam o’Shanter were particularly inspired.

It should prove to be a colourful exhibition as Alexander Gowdie painted with great panache. He used to say, “Joie de Vivre! that’s what I paint!”

Joie de Vivre – the Art of Alexander Gowdie (free admission) is at the Paisley Museum from 19 September to 13 December 2008.

Stars in their eyes at Coats Observatory

Coats Observatory is one of the brightest stars of the tourist trail in this part of Scotland.

The money to build it came from Thomas Coats, the thread magnate but his son James extended it in 1883 and now it houses a number of valuable scientific antiques.

But this is more than a museum and this coming autumn and winter, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Coats Observatory will be open for special viewing nights.

It is an easy drive from the Watermill Hotel, just ask reception for directions, and there is no need to book. Open nights are on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm to 9.30pm.

A cultural weekend in Paisley

The Scottish Chamber Orchestra is visiting Paisley for the first time on September 5 2008 and we still have a few rooms free for that night at the time of writing.

It looks like a good programme with Haydn’s Symphony No 96, also known as the “Miracle”, Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto with soloist Maximiliano Martin and ending with Beethoven’s Symphony No 8.

The concert will be at Paisley’s Town Hall, just a five minute walk from the Watermill Hotel.

Tickets can be booked at Paisley Arts Centre on 0141 887 1010.

Enjoy your golf at the Paisley Golf Club

Although we are very well-placed for a trip to the great golf courses of Ayrshire, such as Turnberry and Royal Troon, guests at the Watermill Hotel often decide to swing a club a lot closer to the hotel.

Paisley Golf Club, just a few minutes drive from here, is one of the nicest golf clubs in Renfrewshire. A scenic moorland course, with good wide fairways and well-maintained greens, it is particularly enjoyable on crisp, clear days in autumn and spring.

Whenever takes your fancy – even if you just want a quick nine holes after a meeting in one of our conference rooms – just contact reception and we will help you make arrangements to play.

Our bar manager is also ready to take your order when you return triumphant after a hole in one!

Paisley Abbey Open Day

We are very lucky to have medieval Paisley Abbey just five minutes from the Watermill Hotel and many of our guests consider it one of the highlights of their visit to this part of Scotland.

Next month, the abbey is welcoming visitors to another Paisley Abbey Doors Open Day (and what magnificent doors they are) and on this occasion they will also be opening the Place of Paisley (formerly known as the Palace of Paisley, and in early times a grand mansion house).

Guides will be on hand to show you the highlights of the abbey, the 1000 year old Barochan Cross, the intricate choir stalls, the 5400 pipe organ and the stained glass windows.

Prospective brides and grooms will also be interested in the St Mirin chapel, one of three areas where they hold weddings in Paisley Abbey.

After drinking your fill of history, you will be glad to know the Cloister Cafe will be open for refreshments.

Paisley Abbey Open Day is on Saturday 13 September 2008.

The World Pipe Band Championship. Having a blast!

One of the most colourful – and yes, noisiest – events of the summer, the World Pipe Band Championships returns to Glasgow in August when bands from 16 different nations including Canada, the USA, Australia, New Zealand and Pakistan as well as the home nations descend on Glasgow Green to stir, inspire and delight locals and visitors alike.

You can’t quite hear the noise here in Paisley but you can certainly get to the event easily when you stay at the historic Watermill Hotel. A quick 10 minute train ride from the main station will speed you into the heart of Glasgow.
